Our Health: Outrunning Cancer

Our Health: Outrunning Cancer has successfully sold out! A second venue at HURONIA PLAYERS THEATRE has been opened, register here!

We know interest in this topic is high as cancer has touched every single one of us in some way. It is the second highest cause of death in Canada. Ironically, as life expectancies continue to extend, even more of us will live long enough to experience cancer. One in four of us will likely die of cancer without further innovation in prevention, diagnosis treatment, and robust psychosocial support.

Come to Our Health’s “Outrunning Cancer” program on September 3rd and learn what is ahead for cancer care, how best to deal with occurrences of cancer and how we are gaining ground. Our 3 panellists are recognized experts and will help us better understand new technologies (e.g. nanotechnology, immunology), techniques (e.g. precision medicine) and psychosocial support being developed and applied successfully. New organizational models (e.g. Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network) are helping to enable and accelerate innovation and collaboration across research and treatment centres.

What has made these new and innovative approaches to cancer care possible? We don’t have to look far to find one Canadian who made a difference. In the late 1970’s, when a Canadian teenager, Terry Fox, was diagnosed with cancer, the cancer research community in Canada was significantly under-funded. But Terry changed everything in 1980. For 143 days he ran a marathon a day on one good leg, raising money for research to battle the disease that would eventually claim his life. Here we are 39 years later. Terry’s Marathon of Hope has now raised over $750,000,000 for cancer research. There have been pockets of tremendous progress in both survival rates and longevity but there is still much more to do to outrun cancer.

Registration for “Outrunning Cancer” is free and opens July 23! Watch the videos from 12 previous “Our Health” programs at Our Health and Past Event Videos

You can also do your part to fulfill Terry’s dream and help fund new life-saving cancer research by participating in the local Terry Fox Run at Perkinsfield Park on Sunday September 15. Terry said “it must go on without me”. Sign up today at Terry Fox Run
